I read somewhere that fashion says who you are without saying anything at all. I think you can say the same for interior design. As for fashion, I wanted to honor my new space in my next chapter with a dress my mother wore when she first met my father in Eritrea. And for decor, that’s where Feven comes in!
Thank you all so much for tuning into our Instagram Live yesterday. Feven and I loved showing you around my new apartment. I learned so much about myself throughout the process and I also learned just how muli-talented Feven is! It was an honor to collaborate with her on my space that I now can call my home.
Budget, always!
Moving is really expensive, so it’s vital to create a budget and stick to it. As Feven taught me, you spend a little more on “show pieces” like a sofa! But I can’t stress enough how tight my budget was and how quickly I found a new love and appreciation for Amazon Prime!
My inspiration for this place come from this denim rug Feven and I found downtown. It anchors the room, hence the HomCom Acrylic coffee table from Amazon. We wanted to see the rug.
Buying art is hella expensive! Most of us don’t have that Jay-Z money, so one way to keep your costs low and your place looking chic is printing quotes at FedEx, ordering prints on Esty and framing them yourself. I found most of my frames at Target and Ikea.
For something a little unexpected, we paired these dinner plates Feven got from Home Goods with authentic china from the 1880’s I got from a late friend years ago.
Most bathrooms are boring, but Feven came up with this black slit wall after the stencil we picked didn’t come out the way we wanted! The “I Woke Up Like This” rug from Society 6 gave it that fun touch I was looking for.
Nothing is more chic than a black entry way! It’s a cost-effective way to add a little drama to your home. Though the entryway felt small we still were able to create a warm and inviting space and so we added this stool from Nate Berkus stool from Target. It was on sale too!
If you got to watch us yesterday, you heard Feven give her 2 key design tips!
Feven’s design 2 cents!
- flow–when moving into a new space, make sure to get a floor plan that way you can measure and order pieces that work in advance! Time is money and you don’t want to wait 2 weeks on a piece only to return the next day!
- cohesive–make sure pieces in your home connect without looking match-y match-y. It will create balance.
One of my favorite things about my apartment is this half black wall… another thing Feven came up with (how lucky am I?)! The butterflies above was inspired by one of my favorite Real Housewives, Carole Radzwill’s NYC bedroom.
For “where did you get that?” details see below!
Thanks again for all the kind messages on Instagram! I was a bit nervous to share my home with you, but the love was breathtaking. We really do love you all! See you next Sunday, 11am pst. Feven is gonna teach me and you how to make her bomb mash potatoes and we’ll talk all things twins!
